The Bible of Jean-Frédéric Ostervald from 1744:
Translator:Jean-Frédéric Ostervald was born in Neuchâtel in 1663 and was there.deceased in 1747. He was consecrated pastor in Neuchâtel at the age of 19. In addition to theministry pastoral, he held a position as professor of theology. He particularly enjoyed preaching and his favorite passage was John 20:1-8. It is said that he preached more than 200 times on this same passage.
Impression: This bible was printed in Neuchâtel under the presses of Abraham Boyve and company in 1744.
Translation: This is a revision of the Bible by David Martin pastor in Wallonia, which was itself based on the Olivétan Bible. The aim of J.-F. Ostervald was above all to modernize the style and to change words which were no longer used because they were considered too old-fashioned. He therefore did not make a huge number of corrections to the accuracy of the text, but rather rectifications at the language level. In his revision, he also shares his arguments and thoughts with us.
